Details: We call this fun little succulent the moonstones. Native to Mexico it is known in the wild only from a single location on rock cliffs at 3,900 feet in San Luis Potosi. This round, rosette succulent plant does best in a very bright place or under a grow lamp indoors. Outdoors we recommend planting in a place that gets morning sun but not full direct afternoon sun. As with most succulents, this plant will die from too much water. It is best to water only when the soil is completely dry. The moonstone succulent is not frost hardy and will not survive in freezing temperatures. It is happiest in a place that stays above 45 degrees F. It will bloom in late winter early spring, gorgeous red-orange flowers on long racemes. The name for the genus comes from the Greek word 'pachys' meaning "thick" and phyton (phuton) meaning "plant" because of the thick swollen leaves and the specific epithet comes from the Latin words 'ovum' meaning "egg" and 'fera' or 'ferum' meaning "carrying" again in reference to the shape of the turgid leaves. The common name "Moonstones" and alternate name "Sugar Almond Plant" is also a reference to the shape and color of the leaves.
